Haines always keeps us plenty busy. We cannot thank @hark_alaska enough for hosting and all their support.

The flowers are out in Alaska, as is the sun, and we hope everyone is out soaking up the beauty with family and friends. We are pushing our weekly meeting to next week to make space for summer fun this holiday weekend.

Kotzebue, Alaska! Adventure clinic time!

Kotzebue is the home of the Iñupiaq people - specifically Qikiqtaġruŋmiutand - sits 26 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and is home to about 3k people.

Every time we try out a new clinic location with Trail Breaker is an adventure. We have to find out what people actually want and need from a general practitioner, how best to communicate with the community, where to work, sleep, and run for the things we forget to pack. Where do we get coffee? It's our first opportunity to make an impression and gain trust. We find out if they like big dogs, little dogs, boat dogs, bear dogs, sled dogs, fluffy or water dogs. Are there cats? Are there feral cats? Is rabies a reality for them (in the arctic that's a YES). So much to learn while also practicing medicine. It's a little nerve wracking as a small business owner, but very exciting.

We had a really great clinic, but here are the things we're most excited about :

*Our team's flexibility and resourcefulness! 2 team member got stuck in Anchorage due to TSA issues but they persevered and negotiated their way onto a full flight the next day. Even got us a new starlink since the internet was down at our clinic location.
*Teaching! We loved the opportunity to have @abbeywhitcomb with us. We are passionate about rural medicine and are so excited there is a current student in the UAF vet curriculum from one of our clinic locations!
*Professional Development: @celesteyyyyyyy got her first ever US guided cysto! But with a bigger team of people with different backgrounds, all of us get more chances to deepen our own role. We become better leaders, better teachers, better learners and better practitioners every time.
*Awesome clients: @elwoodkt created and managed our schedule and took care of our clients all week. Every day we'd say "we had so many awesome clients today!" until Katie remarked that maybe they are consistently awesome because we've built trust and cultivated healthy relationships and she feels proud to be a part of it 😍😭
*EMMA!!!!! We met a little shelter dog named Emma when we arrived and immediately fell in love with her. If we hadn't found her a home by the end of the clinic she was coming back to Anchorage with us. We spayed her and the next day one of our clients saw her and fell in love as well. She is now on a new adventure with her new family.
*Sustainability : we finished this clinic and didn't feel so exhasuted that we needed another week to recover. We actually went out together right after arriving home! And got to actually enjoy our sunny weekend instead of rotting on the couch in silence.

Problem solving with "trash"

We had some hiccups today trying to get to Dillingham, but the new bag for the dental x-ray was a success!!

Purina didn't even bribe me to make it.

An ode to our monster double clinic!

We tried a LOT of new things this clinic. We were ambitious, had some emotional roller coaster moments, some very long days, and some hell yeah moments.

@elwoodkt rocked her first clinic with us and she even still likes us at the end, after being trapped with us for 2 weeks straight!

@hark_alaska staff as usual, fantastic to work with and such a gem of a resource in their community.

I'll try to make some reels about things we tried out which we LIKED!

Something important happened....

I ran payroll for the first time ever in my life, for my team, in my own practice.

Now off to a whale!

We are so delighted to welcome Dr. Sitara Alahan DVM to the board of Trail Breaker Wellness Services! @spunbytheworld

Sitara will be serving as an interim board member until our next annual meeting, at which time we'll try our best to rope her in for good!

Dr. Alahan is a veterinarian, mama of two, and business accountant currently living in BC. She worked in emergency medicine prior to her littles being born, and now serves on the Canadian Veterinary review board and locums in GP.

These ladies need BRAIN FOOD

Even in a regular clinic setting, it can be really hard to eat nutritious food. We get BUSY, you know? And then add in the challenges of finding nutritious food in remote Alaska for less than 1 bagillion dollars, plus the fact that we are working earlier and later than all the food establishments.

You can work hard on junk food for a while. Maybe even all of your 20s. But we know that to do our best work, keep our bodies and brains happy, and not get cranky, we need real food. And so we have to bring it!!

We might eat better on clinic than in "real" life.

Came to hang out with the amazing @honky.tonk.kennel and support she and the team running the Nome Golovin 200 mile sled dog race to bring awareness to opiod abuse prevention!

Big round of applause for Emily and Jamal!

These two are currently in the second section of the University of Florida Euthanasia Technician Certification course. This means they already completed background coursework and have moved onto skills practice. They spent the week with us in Cordova getting repetitive practice drawing up drugs, matching patient to medication, and administering subcutaneous injections, intramuscular injections and intravenous injections in multiple sites on both cats and dogs.

Jamal flew to Cordova from Dillingham to get this practice. He is the only animal control officer in his community and a public health rabies vaccinatior. Jamal has volunteered with Trail Breaker since our first ever visit to Dillinghsm and we're so excited to support him as he takes on this new service for Dillingham.

Emily is an experienced veterinary technician living in a town with no vet, thanks to the Coast Guard! She worked 12-17 hours days with us on each of her days off from Alaska Airlines! She loves vetmed and takes every opportunity to get her hands back in it. She is passionate about the opportunity to provide humane euthanasia in her remote community.

Through Trail Breaker Veterinary Services we are providing training and, in some cases, drug access for remote community Euthanasia Technicians.

Through Trail Breaker Wellness Services and Forget me Not Collective we provide community support for anyone practicing euthanasia, anywhere you live! This is a big job, extremely important in every community, and has the potential to be isolating. We don't want anyone feeling alone in this work.

Join us for a special Forget Me Not Collective this Saturday at 10am AK time. Dr. Anderson of University of Florida will present for us about mental wellness and euthanasia.

Remote community Euthanasia Technicians = angels

Anyone can join us this Saturday, March 7,at 10 am AK time for a special Forget Me Not Collective meeting. We're hosting Dr. Cathy Anderson DVM, MS, who created the euthanasia certification training through the University of Florida, along with many other shelter med and wellness courses for veterinarians. She'll discuss the challenges and rewards of performing euthanasia, which is what Forget Me Not Collective is all about!

You can find the link to join Forget Me Not on the Trail Breaker Website every month, on our wellness non profit page. You never need an invitation. Anyone from anywhere is welcome to come. We do this to support practitioners of euthanasia in whatever way they need. The link to our site is in our bio.
